San Sebastian de Garabandal continues to defy the passage of time as a place of spiritual pilgrimage, its on-going attraction stemming from the astonishing events that took place in the village between 1961 and 1965. The number of visitors grows ever larger with every passing year. Unfortunately, its villagers do not have the resources to attend to most of these visitors in a manner that is adequate to the spiritual fascination and interest that draws them to this remote, mountainous corner of Cantabria. Often these are people who come from distant countries and other continents, not to mention that they do not always speak the Spanish language. Furthermore, it is not possible for them to enjoy access to the witnesses of these events and hear their testimonies, nor to interact with people who have a deeper knowledge about the rich spiritual and eschatological message that Our Lady communicated to the world here. These experts have explored the striking message of Our Lady in comprehensive detail, sharing the results of their research in countless publications, congresses, documentaries, and web pages. Regrettably, they do not live in Garabandal and only travel there occasionally as just another visitor.
Under these circumstances, the journey of the pilgrim, made with no small effort and at times over great distances, is in many cases poorly rewarded by his or her experience of Garabandal and its marvellous story. Many a pilgrim returns home without having truly savoured the fruits of his or her personal encounter with our Mother and the message she once broadcast in this humble, rural village by way of more than 2,000 apparitions to four young girls, whose voices and whose story still resound with compelling immediacy through these streets and mountains.
Hence this supportive “Pilgrim’s Guide to Garabandal,” an initiative that has arisen from a desire to help you overcome these obstacles and present you with a deeper historical and spiritual perspective when you come to visit this place, hallowed as it is by the apparitions of Our Lady. The Guide is carefully designed in such a way as to allow you to adapt yourself in mind and spirit to the successive stages of your visit. Moreover, beyond dispensing much practical information, its structured contents compare and contrast the enduring message of Garabandal with the timeless teachings of Sacred Scripture, other apparitions, and the saints, as well as the findings of astronomy and science.
The distribution of this Guide takes full advantage of ubiquitous new technologies, including mobile devices, tablets, and computers, which make it possible to overcome the limitations of time and space. It is in effect a virtual guide that allows you to adapt your pilgrimage to your own personal rhythm for the duration of your visit. If you want, you can print the slides you find most helpful or integrate them with your own photos, comments, and videos in a travel album as a keepsake or in the form of a record to be shared with the pilgrims that came before you or the ones that will follow. The Guide gives you support in all phases of your pilgrimage, including its preparation and your actual sojourn in the village of Garabandal, as well as your trip’s conclusion, when you return to your place of origin. After the trip, the Guide will remain useful as a means of maintaining contact with other pilgrims who were spiritually moved no less than you as a result of their visit and the message of Garabandal, by way of a user’s forum, as we all await the future great Miracle prophesied there.
The project begins by making available to the pilgrim the first version of more than 500 thematic slides, still in Spanish and English, but soon to be released in several other languages, downloadable in two volumes. This will be accompanied by virtual support online through email for questions posed by users of the Guide. Free of charge for immediate download is a selection of thematic slides from the Guide, which will give you a preview of its contents. In the following weeks, this project will continue to undergo further development, as audio and video versions of the Guide are made available, together with its translation into other languages and the creation of a service section, consisting of certified guides, serving you in different languages, whom you will be able to hire online to accompany you personally during your pilgrimage.
At the moment, the contents of the Guide do not cover things like route and itinerary, accommodations, reservations, transport, etc. These can be found at dozens of specialized websites. However, words of advice and accounts of experiences in these relevant aspects of pilgrimage will be offered, all of which we hope will help make your personal or group pilgrimage a practical success. The Guide also serves as a reference source for the usual worship schedules in Garabandal and nearby towns.
Finally, even if you live far away or if it is not possible for you for whatever reason to journey to Garabandal in the near future, the contents of the Pilgrim's Guide are compiled in such a way as to be useful even for the non-pilgrim, when it comes to fully understanding the Garabandal Apparitions and their spiritual and eschatological message. The contents of the message of Garabandal are fully consistent with the Catholic faith, as has been established by several episcopal statements of the Diocese of Santander. It is a message that teaches us to live our Christian faith in a practical way in the midst of the ordinary duties of life. Its prophetic message has come under more and more detailed study, precisely because it unfolds a coherent timeline for all biblical social eschatology. History has already lent credence to the maternal warnings of Our Lady about difficult times for the Church, little appreciated though these warnings were at first. Two popes and six saints, along with several blesseds and venerables, believed in the supernatural character of the events of Garabandal and recommended the promotion of its message. All of which makes for a most compelling reason to buy the Pilgrim's Guide, participate in its user forum, and access its compendium of documentation.
